The role of advisor is unique and multi-faceted. Advisors are not traditional teachers – subject specialism is less important than a focus on people. Advisors do not work from a deficit model where they are the experts and learners come with nothing.
They are a guide. They enable children to learn how to be, how to learn, and how to open up and explore themselves and their own curriculum.
Advisors work with a relatively small number of learners from local secondary schools over a twelve to eighteen week period. They enable young people to foster meaningful and authentic relationships and will be the key architect, along with learners, schools and families, of a learning plan designed to build self esteem, and the attributes, skills and knowledge needed to be successful in a child’s next steps in education and life.
